Before presenting the characteristics of the batteries available, let’s see some more details on the characteristics and importance of this device.

    What is a battery?

In summary, it is a device that is used to accumulate electricity through a specific chemical process, and then deliver it in the form of direct current.

The battery is a key component for a vehicle to function. It provides the zap of electricity needed to put electrical components to work. It also converts chemical energy into the electrical energy that powers your car and delivers voltage to its starter. And it stabilizes the voltage (a.k.a. energy supply) that keeps the engine running.

4 Key Functions Of An Automotive Battery

A battery holds some of our vehicles’s most essential functions.

Here we explain you some of the main functions of an automotive battery to help you better understand the importance of this component.

    • Engine starter
    • Helper to the ignition system
    • Sustainer
    • Alternator

    1 – Engine starter

Providing energy is the first and most important function of a car battery. A battery stores chemical energy which later, when you turn the key or press the button to start the engine, is converted into electrical energy; the battery takes care of distributing this electrical energy to all parts of the vehicle that may need it.

2 – Helper to the ignition system

When you start a vehicle, the battery not only starts and runs the engine, it also starts the vehicle’s ignition system. It connects the electricity of the entire vehicle and activates its safety functions. the battery also supplies electricity to all electronic devices when the engine is not running.

    3 – Sustainer

If a battery works correctly, it guarantees the sustainability of the energy system of the vehicle in which it is inserted.

After the vehicle is started, the battery is recharged by an alternator to keep everything running smoothly while driving. It also starts storing chemical energy again to have enough to start the car engine next time.

The new type batteries have been specifically designed to ensure maximum performance. They are equipped with systems that prevent them from running out completely, as well as protecting them from corrosive damage for a longer time.

    4 – Alternator

The alternator, while the vehicle is running or in any case with the engine running, supplies energy to the battery so that it can release it for the normal electrical functions of the vehicle such as the audio system, air conditioning, windscreen wipers, lights , the airbag system etc.

Obviously, if there is some type of malfunction or overload to the alternator, a battery can act as a backup and keep the vehicle running for some time.

For this reason, it is essential to use a high-performance, quality battery, especially if you decide to add accessories with high absorption to your vehicle (e.g. lights or additional instruments).

    Kind of batteries available

Now that we have clarified the fundamental importance of the battery, let’s see together a little more about the types of high quality batteries that we make available to our customers:

    3 different types of batteries

As you surely know, a battery is used in millions of vehicles all over the world. Thanks to new developments and innovations, the classic flooded battery has become more and more powerful, reliable and versatile over the years. Over time, two other types of batteries have been developed: the new EFB and AGM batteries meet the increased demands of the new vehicle generations.

AGM and EFB batteries are distinguished by their high performance. Despite the different technological approach, these new generation batteries share a whole series of positive characteristics: they require only minimal maintenance and do not fail as frequently as ten years ago, thanks to the great leaps forward made in technology.

A few decades ago it was necessary to check the acid level in the battery and, if necessary, top up with distilled water. In modern maintenance-free batteries, water loss is so minimal that topping up is unnecessary throughout the life of the battery.

Let’s see in more detail what are the 3 main types of existing batteries, what characterizes them and what makes them more suitable for a certain use rather than another.

    • The flooded acid battery (SLI) – reliable and economical
    • The EFB battery – more cycles and longer life
    • AGM batteries – high performance and durability

1 – The flooded acid battery (SLI) – reliable and economical

Traditional batteries, such as lead-acid batteries, are the most common. This system is often referred to as SLI, a term that summarizes the tasks of the battery: Starting, Lighting, Ignition. These batteries are ideal for vehicles without start-stop systems and with few electrical consumers.

A traditional starter battery consists of six cells. A cell consists of a set of positive plates and a set of negative plates which in turn consist of several electrodes.

A positive electrode is composed of active mass of lead dioxide and a positive grid of a lead alloy. The grid gives the electrodes a solid structure and acts as a conductive material at the same time. The active mass is immersed in an electrolyte, a mixture of acid and distilled water.

A negative electrode also consists of active mass, pure lead and a negative grid. The electrodes are divided by a separator. The required battery capacity is achieved by connecting the individual cell plates in parallel. The series connection of the individual cells produces the voltage of 12 Volts.

2 – The EFB battery – more cycles and longer life

EFB batteries are often fitted in vehicles equipped with basic start-stop systems. Due to its superior performance, this battery is often fitted when replacing a traditional lead-acid battery.

The EFB battery is an optimized and more performing version of the traditional SLI battery.

The abbreviation “EFB” stands for “enhanced flooded battery”.

In this battery the plates are isolated from each other thanks to a microporous separator.

A polyester fiber is placed between the plate and the separator.

This material serves to stabilize the active material of the plates and to increase the life cycle of the battery.

EFB batteries are distinguished by the large number of charge cycles and offer a capacity for partial and deep discharges twice that of traditional batteries.

3 – AGM batteries – high performance and durability

An AGM battery is ideal for vehicles equipped with start-stop systems with energy recovery during braking. A conventional starter battery is not suitable for the high demands of these systems.

AGM batteries are versatile, powerful and ideally suited to meet the highest demands. The structure of an AGM battery is not much different than that of a flooded battery. The electrolyte in AGM batteries is absorbed in a special glass fiber separator, hence the designation “absorbent glass mat”. The contact surface thus obtained makes possible a high efficiency and also avoids leakage of liquid from the battery. The battery has an airtight casing. This peculiarity allows the internal recombination of oxygen and hydrogen which counteracts the loss of water. To prevent any overpressure, the individual battery cells are equipped with a relief valve which guarantees maximum safety even in the event of a malfunction.

Also in terms of service life, AGM batteries have significant advantages over conventional starter batteries. In fact, in addition to withstanding a triple number of discharge cycles, they can also be positioned at 90 degrees, as the electrolyte, being absorbed, cannot escape. Even if the battery container should break, no liquid will escape.

What is the starter battery for?

The starter battery is, without a doubt, the most common type of battery. It is used to start the internal combustion engine and serves to give the moped the necessary force, as well as performing a support function for all the other car utilities.

What is the engine battery used for?

The purpose of the battery is to accumulate electrical energy in the form of direct current: in our cars the function of the battery is to allow the starter motor to turn on through a small discharge and to keep the electrical system active.

Are there any warning signs that a battery needs to be replaced?

There are various indications and symptoms that your battery may need replacement:

    • Slow engine crank: When you attempt to start the vehicle, the cranking of the engine is sluggish and takes longer than normal to start. You’d best describe it as the “rur rur rur” starting noise sound.
    • Three years + battery age is considered an old timer: Your battery can last well beyond three years but, at the very least, have its current condition inspected on a yearly basis when it reaches the three year mark. Battery life cycles range from three-to-five years depending on the battery. However, driving habits, weather and frequent short trips (under 20 minutes) can drastically shorten the actual life of your car battery.

How to determine if a battery is too old?

To determine the age of a battery with certainty, we would recommend relying on the date reported by the installer.
